“We have no information that the victims of the terrible attacks in Sri Lanka are Poles,” Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk, deputy head of the foreign ministry, was quoted as saying by the Polish news agency, PAP, despite reports that the dead included Polish victims too.

On Easter Sunday, suicide bombers made a series of coordinated attacks on churches, including two Catholic and one Protestant and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka. On Tuesday, the police reported that the number of fatalities had risen to 321.

Among the victims of Sunday’s attacks in Sri Lanka are citizens of several countries, including the US, the UK, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Australia, India and Turkey. However, most of the victims are Sri Lankans.

A local Islamist group has been blamed for the attack by Colombo and overall 40 suspects have been detained in connection with the blasts.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s defence minister was quoted as saying by CNN that “preliminary” probe indicate that the blasts were in response to the deadly attacks on mosques in New Zealand in March.

Attacks in the island nation in the Indian Ocean have been the largest since 2009 when the Sri Lankan Civil War ended.

The New Zealand mosque shootings were two consecutive terrorist attacks at mosques in Christchurch during Friday Prayer on March 15.
