John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope since the 16th century. His canonization process took less than three years, and he was proclaimed a saint along with pope John XXIII in St. Peter's Square in 2014. With pope-emeritus Benedict XVI in attendance, Pope Francis led the historic canonization, attended by over 800 thousand people from across the globe. Since his death in 2005, the Polish pope has been remembered for his deep teachings and joyous presence.
