As reported by the NYT, the training of Ukrainian pilots on Western fighter planes is progressing rapidly, compared to normal standards.

Nevertheless, the process is slower than expected in Ukraine and allied countries because pilots trained on Soviet-era aircraft and tactics must first learn to communicate in English and get used to Western combat habits to effectively utilize the fighter jets.

Last spring, Denmark led a coalition of European countries committed to supplying Western fighters to Ukraine. Ukrainian officials, who had previously overcome Western resistance to supplying advanced weapons (artillery, air defense missiles, tanks), said that the fighter jet is the last major weapon Ukrainian soldiers need to win the war against Russia.

So far, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium have committed to sending 45 fighter jets to Ukraine, enough to create three small squadrons.

Denmark will send six aircraft later in the spring, with 13 to be delivered by the end of the year and into 2025. The remaining countries have not yet set delivery dates for their F-16s. According to Jurriaan Esser, a spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Defense, his country will send the declared 24 aircraft when Ukraine is ready to accept them.

The need to repair and modernize outdated and damaged runways at airports in Ukraine due to armed conflict may further delay the deployment of F-16s to the war zone, concludes the New York Times.

Attack beyond borders

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg explained in an interview with Radio Svoboda back in February that when Ukraine receives F-16 fighters, it will have the right to self-defense, including striking Russian military targets outside Ukraine.

He noted that all of Ukraine’s allies want American aircraft to be there as soon as possible, but added that the effectiveness of operating these machines will be better if pilots are well-trained, as well as technical support crews and other auxiliary personnel.

“So I think we should listen to military experts regarding when we are ready or when allies are ready to start sending and delivering F-16s. The sooner, the better,” said the NATO chief.
