On Wednesday, the parliament, controlled by the Georgian Dream party, passed the Foreign Influence Transparency Law, despite mass protests that had been going on for nearly a month. Modeled on the Russian law, hence simply called the “Russian Law” or the “Law on Foreign Agents,” it stipulates that legal entities and media outlets receiving more than 20% of their budgets from abroad would be subject to registration and reporting, and would go into a special register of agents of foreign influence. The Justice Ministry would be able to conduct inspections of such organizations under any pretext. The Kremlin uses analogous regulations to effectively suppress dissenting voices.A powerful moment from the Tbilisi protests: watch as a group of spirited young people push back the police's attempt to target a small group of protesters.
