Ciolacu was asked in an interview with Digi24 whether Romania would be unable to provide Ukraine with the Patriot air-defense system as it needed it for its own protection.

He said that such a position, as expressed by his defense minister, was premature and that a decision would be taken by the country’s Supreme National Defense Council.

“And we also saw the Kremlin's reaction...with a veiled threat to Romania, " Ciolacu said. “In other words, Moscow is very concerned about Romania's possible solution. But Russia will not attack Romania.”

Ciolacu argued that as a NATO member, Romania is not isolated politically or militarily and that Moscow has neither the resources nor any reason to attack his country.

"I repeat, now there is no threat that Russia would attack Romania – it is illogical for them to do this,” he said. “I am pleased with Moscow's response. This means that our decisions have weight, and they are afraid that the world will mobilize efforts against dictator Putin."
