Poland spending biggest proportion of GDP on defense in NATO: Sikorski “We are spending the biggest proportion of our GDP (on defense) in NATO, 4% of GDP, and we might go higher next year,” Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told British public broadcaster BBC News late on Friday in an interview regarding Poland's efforts to protect itself against possible aggression from Russia, and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The Polish foreign minister emphasized that he does not believe President Putin would be reckless enough to attack a NATO member state. However, he emphasized Putin’s nerve in attacking Ukraine, leading to his current status as a war criminal.

Referring to French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement that nothing is off the table regarding the presence of Western troops in Ukraine, Sikorski stated that it is good to “make Putin wonder what we (the West) will do and not always reassure him that we won’t do certain things.”

Ukraine needs more help

The Polish FM also thanked President Biden and the U.S. Congress for approving military aid to Ukraine. The minister emphasized Ukraine’s urgent need for anti-aircraft missiles to safeguard its industries, power plants, and infrastructure.

Sikorski added that the U.S. bill would also pass the frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. “I think It’s much better to spend the money on protecting Ukraine, than on having to rebuild it,” Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said. No signs Putin wants to negotiate

Regarding the role of diplomacy in ending the conflict, Sikorski remarked that there is no shortage of potential mediators, mainly Turkey, the UN and China, which “could actually force Putin to end this war”.

However the Polish FM stressed, “I see no signs that Putin wants to negotiate.”
