In 2023, Poland paid PLN 2 billion (EUR 461 mln), Deputy Climate Minister Anita Sowińska told the Senate Climate and Environment Committee. “This year we have estimated that it could be up to PLN 2.3 bn,” she noted.

In April 2023, Poland implemented an EU directive on reducing the environmental impact of certain plastic products, the so-called Single Use Plastic Directive.

Plastic tax refers to liabilities and fees related to the marketing of single-use plastic products.

“This ‘plastic tax’ is an own resource to the 2021–2027 EU budget. In fact, it is not a tax but a contribution from the Member States to the EU, based on the amount of non-recycled plastic packaging waste produced by each member state,” multinational accounting organization KPMG wrote on its official website.
