The attack occurred during a government meeting in Handlova, with
Prime Minister Fico sustaining gunshot wounds and subsequently being hospitalized. According to reports from TA3 television, the alleged perpetrator has been apprehended by the police.
Ambassador Maciej Ruczaj was asked on TVN24 about the official reactions of the Slovakian state following the attack on the Slovakian government’s head. “Parliament interrupted its proceedings. Essentially, representatives of all political parties and the president issued statements primarily wishing the prime minister a speedy recovery,” he responded.
“Of course, emotions are running high on both sides, but the most strongly expressed position was that this is an event unprecedented in Slovakia’s history, and in a sense, it’s an attack on the entire Slovakian democracy,” he emphasized.
In response to the incident, significant actions have been taken, including the cancellation of opposition demonstrations and a halt to political campaigning, as announced by the largest opposition party’s leader in Bratislava.
Regarding Prime Minister Fico’s medical care, he was transported to a hospital in Banská Bystrica due to its proximity to the site of the attack. However, specific details about his condition remain undisclosed, as confirmed by Ambassador Ruczaj.
“The Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement that this decision was simply due to the distance. That is, due to the need for some quick medical procedures, they decided to transport him to the nearest intensive care facility. Unfortunately, we have no other information regarding his health status,” Ruczaj added.
