Former PM Bielecki: New gov’t shows Europe it is reversing a populistic trend Former Prime Minister of Poland, Jan Krzysztof Bielecki was TVP World’s special guest on Thursday. Bielecki served as PM for most of 1991. From December 1993 to September 2003, he was the Polish representative in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Former Prime Minister of Poland, Jan Krzysztof Bielecki was TVP World’s special guest on Thursday. Bielecki served as PM for most of 1991. From December 1993 to September 2003, he was the Polish representative in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He also served as president of the Polish Institute of International Affairs between 2009 and 2015.

Bielecki was asked to give his initial thoughts on Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski’s foreign policy speech to parliament - taking place on Thursday morning.

“The message in strategic terms is quite simple. Poland, from the beginning of the transformation from 1989, the main objective was to get out of the buffer zone of the integrated West and the Soviet Union, which took us quite a long time, from 1989 to 2004 (...) to bring back Poland to the western community; which is joined under the umbrella of NATO,” Bielecki explained.

When asked about fundamental foreign policy changes for Poland, Bielecki asserted that they have already occurred.

“I think that change has already taken place since the Tusk government was appointed in December last year. To some extent Donald Tusk is a modern consultant to some European leaders, explaining how it is possible (...) to reverse a populistic trend in the country and bring back functioning parliamentary democracy,” Bielecki said.

“From that moment [the change of government in 2023], I think the position of Poland is recognised as much more significant for the European future,” the former PM added.

“And today Mr Sikorski tries to build into this new position of Poland, explaining that we are not on the margins of the European Union, but we are in the center (...) so Sikorski is bringing back Poland to center,” Bielecki expressed.
