The attempt to set fire to the Nożyk Synagogue in Warsaw occurred overnight, from Tuesday to Wednesday. As per the Israeli ambassador in Poland, an individual threw a device, commonly known as a Molotov cocktail, at the synagogue. This attack was denounced by several figures, including President Andrzej Duda, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, and the ambassadors of Israel and the United States.

On Wednesday evening, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Interior and Administration (MSWiA), Czesław Mroczek, declared the apprehension of a suspect involved in the attack. The Warsaw Police Headquarters also released a concise statement regarding the incident. “Officers from the KRP Warsaw I, in collaboration with officers from the KSP and the Internal Security Agency (ABW), detained a 16-year-old male, a Polish citizen, in relation to the incident that transpired tonight at the synagogue on Twarda Street in Warsaw,” was announced before 9 p.m. on platform X.

In a statement published on the KSP website, the police disclosed that a 16-year-old was apprehended in Warsaw’s Bemowo district. “The arrest transpired around 8 p.m. in one of the apartments in the Bemowo district of Warsaw. The individual suspected of hurling a bottle filled with a flammable substance at the synagogue was identified as a 16-year-old Polish citizen,” the statement read.

The police stated that “from the initial moments following the incident, officers from all departments of the Warsaw Police Headquarters, its subordinate units, as well as officers of the Internal Security Agency (ABW), were engaged in the operations.” The primary emphasis, as highlighted, was to swiftly identify and apprehend the perpetrator.

“There is and will be no tolerance for such behavior. In every instance of law violation, every individual will be held accountable,” the police warned.

The Nożyk Synagogue, located at Twarda Street 6, is the only pre-war synagogue in Warsaw that has been preserved and remains operational. Since 2008, the building has been under renovation, which includes the replacement of the roof covering and the repair of the damaged wooden structure.
