The torch relay will spend several days aboard the Belem, which is expected to arrive in Marseille on May 8. This historic ship was launched just weeks after the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.

The Greek part of the 11-day Olympic Torch relay has come to an end arriving at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. When leaving the Greek capital, the three-masted vessel was accompanied by a Greek trireme “Olympia” and over a dozen sailing boats while thousands watched from the shore.

On Sunday, the Belem will pass through the Corinth Canal. The project is regarded as a feat of modern engineering and was jointly designed and built by French and Greek engineers. With 90 days to go, the organizers are setting the tone for this year’s Games, which are set to begin with a boat parade along the river Seine. Over 10,000 athletes will take part in hundreds of sporting events, the first of which will take place on July 27, the day after the long-awaited opening ceremony. Tens of thousands of fans are expected at the French capital.
