Sikorski emphasized that according to the constitution, foreign policy is the purview of the Council of Ministers, with the president tasked with implementing it, even if he may not personally agree with it.

President Andrzej Duda’s recent remarks on Poland’s potential participation in the Nuclear Sharing program have stirred debate and raised questions about the country’s foreign policy direction. Amidst differing perspectives from various government officials, the issue has come to the forefront, shedding light on Poland’s strategic considerations in the face of evolving regional security dynamics.

Presidential minister Wojcech Kolarski, in response to Sikorski’s remarks, reiterated that consultations had indeed taken place with the previous government. He emphasized the evolving security landscape, particularly in light of Russia’s actions, suggesting that Poland’s interest in participating in Nuclear Sharing has been influenced by these developments.

“The situation changed a year ago when Russia moved its nuclear weapons to Belarus… It is in our interest to respond to this,” Kolarski said.

The prospect of a meeting between the president and the prime minister on this matter underscores its significance and the need for cohesive decision-making within the government.

Nuclear Sharing, as part of NATO’s broader policy of nuclear deterrence, offers member countries the opportunity to participate in planning for the use of nuclear weapons with warheads remaining under the control of the United States.
